“My all-time favorite room. We had a great time playing this room while visiting KC. The puzzles are novel, the theme was tight, and there are elements of this room I haven’t seen anywhere else. Can’t wait to play more rooms at Breakout KC!”

“Loved the set design and the atmosphere. We all had a lot of fun with this one. Puzzles were on the easier side but some unique ideas and they kept everyone engaged. Rooms with actors generally always elevate the fun and immersion and this one was no exception.”

“This place was literally so cool! The room was super intuitive with its puzzles and had a very intriguing story, with detailed sets and super fun environments. As soon as we finished, my group decided to book another one. It’s so so fun, and even though we were with 2 strangers, the gameplay required a lot of teamwork so we worked together well! It’s definitely a harder game, with puzzles that make you think and problem solve. I liked the story a lot and like with all games if you play into the theme you’ll enjoy it a lot more! :)”

“A visually stunning room with a great mix of different types of puzzles. The puzzles all made sense to the storyline, and having additional video clips as the game went along really made you feel immersed in a mission.”

“As with all of ‘Escape Game’ rooms, I had an absolute blast playing Special Ops! The atmosphere was amazing, and the puzzles are so unique!! Not to mention the fact that the environment shift in the second act really takes you by surprise!! My friends and I went in with the plan to essentially LARP as Special Ops agents, but we got so immersed in the puzzles that we lost that act pretty quick (haha!). I admit, I wish more had been done with the first rooms, the atmosphere was so fun and I definitely would’ve enjoyed staying in there for longer, but the twist that took us to the second part was so much fun too.”

“I would definitely recommend! This one is on our top five list so far. There were some creative puzzles and elements here, and the theming was great. I would call this a gen 3 room, but it still utilizes a high number of traditional pad locks.”

“A whimsical and fun room--and as usual for TEG, visually stunning. The time travel aspect was implemented in a very clever way. The ticket delivery system, and the instant audio feedback for several of the puzzles were super impressive to me.”

“Just did this room with my family, definitely one of the best rooms I’ve ever done! They earned all of their awards and deserve so many more. The puzzles were very challenging but always intuitive. I have done the vast majority of escape rooms with just 1 other person, however I would strongly recommend a larger group for this room. The puzzles require many different skill sets, dividing and conquering is essential to success. I also love that this location has a selection for how the game master will interact with you throughout the game, typically we have to request “no unsolicited hints” but that’s built into your experience from the beginning. All around an excellent experience at a local small business and I can’t wait for the next time I can go back!”

Remember those point-and-click adventure games where you’re locked in a room and have to solve puzzles to find the key and escape? Those online games were the original inspiration for the live escape rooms you’ll find all across the world today. An escape room is an immersive experience where you (and your team of 2 or more people) are locked in a room with a series of puzzles for 60 minutes. To escape and win the game, you have to look for clues, solve the puzzles, and find the key. While most escape rooms only give you 60 minutes to complete the challenge, others may have shorter or longer time limits. Many venues are private rooms where you and your team are the only players. However, some places may pair you with other groups who booked a slot at the same time. And don’t worry about getting stuck, asking for hints on a difficult puzzle is totally normal. While the original escape room (created by SCRAP in 2007) had a fairly simple aesthetic, today’s escape games often take you into a different world. Artistic set designs, secret doors, and unique interactive elements are all part of the fun. It’s like an adventure game that you can interact with in real life. But if you’re hoping to preview any rooms before you book a game somewhere, detailed images and videos can be hard to find. To keep the puzzles a secret and preserve the experience of seeing the room for the first time, most venues only offer a few photos or a short trailer about the room’s theme or narrative. The only way to know what it’s like is to go and try it for yourself!
